I've been designing content for publications like Essence, Ebony, Fortune, Money, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and many more since 1980. It's part of my creative DNA. From advertising, to book covers to newspapers and magazines, most work has been published in the USA, Europe, South America and parts of Africa.
One of the joys of my life today is producing design solutions that involve faith. I serve as the Creative Director for the Church of God In Christ (COGIC) magazine, The Whole Truth. I was first selected to redesign the masthead of the legacy publication, then assigned to redesign the interior of the magazine -- cover-to-cover. The COGIC organization has grown to over 6 million members worldwide since 1895. The redesign was such an honor.
I dig the entire process from receiving the content for each issue: articles, ads, graphics, etc. Then I read each article to develop unique looks for the respective narratives. The balance of color, typography, images, emphasis and intent all form the composition that supports the story and holds the attention of the reader. In addition to design I photograph the COGIC convocation each year to build a visual library for the coming year of activity. Working with the Managing Director and Editor I'm afforded a great deal of creative latitude to keep each issue fresh and relevant, with sense of modernity and still represent a fairly conservative global entity. Then I await a final approval from Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake for each and every issue. I love it all.
I just uploaded a new gallery with a few samples of my publication design for COGIC. Hope you enjoy.
